A Dance To Last a Lifetime

Wouldn’t it be great to have the romance of dancing for the rest of your lives together? Arthur Murray Dance Studios have been teaching future husbands and wives to dance for over 95 years. It is our experience that every couple has different needs, preferences and time schedules but everyone has the ability to become a good dancer with enough time. We can put something together that is uniquely yours.
For most couples their wedding day is considered to be the most important day of their lives. It wasn’t so long ago that a couple’s first dance as man and wife was just an effervescent memory—a fact that was no small blessing for couples who happened to lack any experience with dancing. As technology constantly improves, more and more couples are having their most cherished memories documented on video tapes and DVD’s. With the proliferation of the internet and the simplicity of video sharing, a couple can share their special day with people all over the world. The highlight of any reception and the image most guests will remember is that of the first dance. That’s why many prospective brides and grooms want to give a more polished and graceful performance on their big day. They are increasingly opting to take dance lessons to help prepare for what may be the performance of their lives. Don’t be caught unprepared for the moment that will last a lifetime.
Learning to dance is a special gift that you and your spouse-to-be can give to each other that will completely transform your wedding and add joy and romance to your marriage for years to come. A couple who feels confident and poised when they dance together will ensure that their very first dance together and husband and wife will be a memory they will cherish forever.
Here are a few things to consider in preparing for your wedding dance:
Don’t wait until the last minute. Learning to dance well takes time. Remember that your schedule will get very hectic as the wedding day approaches. Arthur Murray recommends starting to prepare four to six months earlier to allow time for practice, especially If you are a newcomer to dancing.
If you have already chosen your “wedding song”, please bring a recording of it to your first lesson so your instructor can plan your lessons accordingly. It is okay if you haven’t chosen a song yet, you can bring a few choices with you, or your Arthur Murray Wedding Specialist can assist you by giving you some options to listen to.
Be aware that not every wedding dance will be a Waltz. Most songs that couples bring into the studio range from being a Rumba or Foxy, to even a sassy Swing or sexy Salsa. All of these dances and many more, are applicable to the popular music played at most weddings today. Don’t limit yourself to just one dance for the wedding. Be prepared for a variety of dances on your wedding day.
Be patient when learning to dance. Remember that dance lessons can actually be a great stress reliever. As time gets closer to the wedding, many couples have more stress In their lives than they have ever experienced. Lessons will pull you out of the hustle and bustle of the day to spend an hour or so with your intended, having fun and working together productively at the same time. Even after the big day, many couples keep up with their lessons to provide them with a fun and relaxing date night.
Don’t try to teach your fiancé. You’ll both have a lot more fun dancing if you let your instructor do the teaching.
Practice in the right shoes. Wear shoes that are similar to the ones you’ll be wearing on the big day.
Be consistent with all of your appointments (privates, groups, and practice sessions). The more often you come in, the less review there will be on each lesson and you will feel more prepared for the wedding. Use the classes and practices whenever possible. Everyone feels more comfortable on a private lesson, but the classes and parties will be closer to what the rest of your reception will be like, and the teachers will be right there to help! Group classes and Practice Sessions also help to solidify the information received on private lessons, making the private lessons more efficient.
Don’t forget to coordinate with your wedding videographer to get the best “coverage” of your special dance. You’ll need to talk to your DJ or wedding band as well so they don’t cut your special dance short. They’re used to most couples who can’t dance so you’ll find they quickly get other people onto the dance floor to dance with you so you can “hide in the crowd”.
